Most popular female and male haircuts of all time

We commisioned some research recently at Crown Clinic to find the most popular hairstyles of all time for both men and women.

Here are the full findings with analysis from our hair transplant surgeon Asim Shahmalak:

Duchess of Cambridge has the best female hairstyle of all time – beating Princess Diana’s iconic shorter cut from early 1990s, according to a new survey
* Women voted Kate’s flowing brunette locks from her 2011 marriage to Prince William their favourite style, followed by Jennifer Aniston’s layered cut from Friends and Audrey Hepburn wearing her hair up in Breakfast at Tiffany’s;
* Fourth place went to Diana’s amazing shorter cut, created by stylist Sam McKnight which turned her into a fashion icon;
* The male list was topped by George Best in his Sixties heyday when he was playing at Manchester United, followed by Elvis’s slick back quiff from the late 1950s and James Dean’s quiff from the 1955 movie Rebel Without A Cause;
* The results are from a survey of 2,000 people (1,000 men and 1,000 women) from Crown Clinic in Manchester, the UK’s leading hair transplant clinic
* Crown Clinic hair transplant surgeon Asim Shahmalak: “What these polls show is just how important people’s hair is in defining their overall style. If the hair isn’t right, nothing else works, as Diana showed with those big cuts in the 1980s.”

The Duchess of Cambridge has the best female hairstyle of all time – beating Princess Diana’s iconic shorter cut from the early 1990s, according to a new survey.
Women voted Kate’s long flowing brunette locks at the time of her marriage to Prince William in 2011 as the best look.
In second place was Jennifer Aniston’s layered cut, known as The Rachel after her Friends’ character, styled during her mid-90s fame as their second favourite.
In third place was Audrey Hepburn’s famous chestnut hair, worn up in an elegant French twist as Holly Golightly in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Princess Diana came fourth with the striking short-cut created by her long-time stylist Sam McKnight in the early 1990s which turned her into a fashion icon.
Fifth place went to Grace Jones’ flat top when she played the villain in the 1985 James Bond film A View To A Kill.
George Best in his 1960s heyday won the men’s vote, followed by Elvis’s slicked back quiff, James Dean’s ground-breaking look from the movie Rebel Without A Cause, David Beckham’s current side parting with beard, and Bob Marley’s dreadlocks.
The results were from a new survey of 2,000 people by Crown Clinic in Manchester, Britain’s leading hair transplant clinic.
It asked 1,000 women to vote for the most iconic female hairstyles and 1,000 men picked the best male styles.
Crown Clinic hair transplant surgeon Asim Shahmalak: “What these polls show is just how important people’s hair is in defining their overall style. If the hair isn’t right, nothing else works, as Diana showed with those big cuts in the 1980s.
“When Diana got her hair right in 1990, she instantly became a fashion icon.
“The Duchess of Cambridge is definitely a style icon for the modern age, inspiring women to change their styles when she switches looks in the same way that Princess Diana did in the 90s.
“It shows how quickly our memories fade because Princess Diana would undoubtedly have come top 20 years ago, but a new generation of royals now set all the trends.
“No man looked better than George Best in his Sixties heyday playing for Manchester United when he became the first ‘pop star’ footballer with a wonderfully full head of hair.
“Most of the popular male styles are retro, but David Beckham and Harry Styles remain style icons for the modern age.
“All the men on the list have thick hair and none shows the slightest trace of baldness.
“Would we have the same memories of George Best from the Sixties if he had been losing his hair?”
