What is a FUT Hair Transplant?

Having a hair transplant is more than just patching up a few bald or thinning areas, and while you can go home within a few hours following the treatment, it’s a technical procedure that requires a skilled surgeon.

There are also different types of hair transplants, including FUT and FUE, both of which are accredited by experts within the industry, with a proven high success rate. The one you choose is dependent on how severe your hair loss is and the background behind it. Fortunately, it’s not a decision you have to make on your own. Crown Clinic’s founder and leading surgeon, Dr Shahmalak will discuss your options during your consultation and provide you with as much information as possible to help you make the right decision while providing you with an understanding of what the procedure will entail.

As mentioned, FUT hair transplant is one of the most recognised procedures with a proven track record and one that is valued and approved by medical professionals within the industry. But what is a FUT hair transplant, and is it right for you?

What Is An FUT Hair Transplant and Is It Right For Me?

FUT hair transplant stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation. In simple terms, the procedure involves grafting thousands of hair follicles in a single session. The surgeon will remove a strip of hair from the back or sides of your scalp to transplant into the affected area. In terms of cosmetics, FUT hair transplant has a more significant impact.

While it sounds straightforward, it does require an experienced hair surgeon to perform the surgery, which is why we strongly advise against having any form of hair transplant abroad.

FUT hair transplants, particularly in the UK, are popular amongst men; however, the procedure is still beneficial to women.

Did you know that 30% of men begin to lose their hair before reaching 30 and 40% by the age of 40? Over 50% of women will all experience hair loss during their lifetime. These figures are high, and a proportion of them will suffer from anxiety and a lack of confidence. Fortunately, with advancements in technology, paired with scientific and medical research, we now have permanent solutions to hair loss conditions.

It’s important to remember, that even if you’re suffering from hair loss under the age of 25, Crown Clinic will not be able to perform a hair transplant procedure. You must be over 25, and if you’re offered a FUT or FUE, or other surgical procedure before this age, you must decline and speak to a medical professional such as your GP. Before reaching 25, you will not have an established hair loss pattern, making it exceedingly difficult to carry out the procedure, successfully and it can have a long-term damaging effect.

FUT hair transplants provide longevity and a natural head of hair for the rest of your life. Don’t worry, our physicians won’t redesign your hairline, so it looks unnatural or give you a new style that makes it obvious you’ve had a transplant! This surgical procedure, along with FUE, will give your scalp a natural look and no one will notice the difference, not even your hairdresser.

What Else Do You Need To Know?

A FUT hair transplant is perfectly safe, and you’ll be under anaesthetic during the procedure. Of course, to ensure safety and success, it must be performed by a skilled and experienced physician.

Following a FUT, you can go home, generally within 20 minutes. We do advise that you avoid driving, so make sure you have someone available to collect you. Sleeping can be uncomfortable for the first few days, so sleep with your head elevated to a 45° angle to minimise swelling. You can place an ice pack on the swelling to support with recovery and any discomfort, and you’ll be prescribed, appropriate pain killers. Unfortunately, you’ll need to avoid alcohol for up to five days.

Like with most surgical procedures, there will be minimal scarring, especially once your hair follicles begin to regrow. With Crown Clinic’s pioneering techniques and experience, scarring will be minimal.

Your hair will start growing around four to six months following the FUT hair transplant procedure, but it can take between eight to twelve months to have a significant impact. But don’t worry if this seems like a long time to you, it really isn’t, and the results are permanent.

As your hair begins to regrow, so will your confidence.

If you’re unsure if a FUT hair transplant is right for you, more information is available on our website, but feel free to speak with Dr Shahmalak, as he can offer more guidance.
