Questions You Should Ask Your Surgeon Before a Hair Transplant

POSTED: 26 October 2018

There are several factors that determine whether a hair transplant is right for you. At your consultant appointment, the surgeon should assess you by your age, health and the condition of your scalp.

If a hair transplant is recommended they will explain the next steps in the process. If your surgeon decides the time is not right, they will suggest some different approaches in the short term.

What experience and qualifications does your surgeon carry?

As with any surgical procedure, it’s essential that you carry out thorough research and don’t try to cut corners to find a cheaper alternative. This is especially true when selecting a surgeon to carry out your hair transplant. Ensure that they are registered with the General Medical Council. Try to find testimonials from previous patients that they have treated. This will give a good indication of their reputation.

What is the best way to prepare for surgery?

Preparation, or a lack thereof, can affect the success or failure of a hair transplant. Your surgeon should give you tips to utilise in the fortnight leading up to the procedure. This should include things like;

  • Take vitamin C to enhance your immune system
  • Avoid alcohol as it widens blood vessels and could lead to excessive bleeding during the transplant
  • Do not have a haircut – longer hair will help to cover any healing skin.
  • Do not consume any food or drink after midnight leading up to the procedure
  • Wash your hair but do not use any styling products such as gel or mousse
  • Ensure you have a relaxing place to retreat to during your recovery period

What should I expect from the procedure?

The time it takes to perform your transplant will be relative to the size of the area being operated on. It could take a few hours, or it could be split into several sessions across two days. Your surgeon will advise you on this beforehand. At this point, it’s also worth inquiring about pain management both during and after the procedure.

How long does it take to recover?

Managing your recovery period effectively is important to the success of the transplant. It’s recommended to allow two weeks for the skin to fully heal but your surgeon should give you more specific advice in this area.

Should I have an FUE or FUT transplant?

There are two types of hair transplant - the more modern FUE, where individual hair follicles are removed and transplanted, and FUT, where a strip of hair is removed and transplanted. The more popular procedure, FUE offers less scarring and a shorter recovery period. However, your surgeon may advise you to try FUT if it is more suited to your situation.

When will I begin to see the results?

It requires some patience before you begin to the results of a hair transplant. It is not an instant fix and can take many months before your transplanted hair begins to grow. Your surgeon should give you accurate, but realistic timescales and manage your expectations properly.

How much will it cost in total?

At your consultation, your surgeon should be very clear about the costs involved. Ask for a quote and be sure to inquire about any finance options on offer.
