How stress caused Spurs’ £25 million winger Lucas Moura to lose his hair

POSTED: 22 August 2018

Spurs' £25 million winger Lucas Moura has blamed STRESS for his rapid hair loss over the last five years.

The Brazilian winger said that worries over his move to Europe caused his hair to fall out.

The 26-year-old star also blamed family genes for going bald over such a short period of time.

These pictures show just how quickly Moura has lost his hair since leaving Brazil for Paris Saint-Germain for £38 million in 2013 before moving to Spurs.

He is pictured shortly after signing for PSG with a full head of hair but he has advanced male pattern baldness as he poses in his Spurs shirt just before the start of this season.

Moura quizzed himself about his hair loss in an interview with Brazil's ESPN.

The star, capped 35 times by Brazil, said: "So what happened - it was the family, right? My father, my brother, everyone bald.

"And it's like Europe, too. Everyone thinks it's a thousand wonders, but there's that stress, too, which ends bringing our head down."

Moura flopped at PSG and also struggled after joining Spurs in January, but he has rediscovered his best form this season, starting in both of Spurs' Premiership victories and scoring against Fulham at Wembley on Saturday.

Britain's leading hair loss expert Asim Shahmalak confirmed that the stress of five years of turmoil adjusting to playing with European clubs could have accelerated Moura's baldness.

Harley Street hair transplant surgeon Dr Shahmalak from Crown Clinic said: "Both physical and emotional stress can contribute to hair loss.

"Moura's struggles with PSG and Spurs may well be a factor in his hair falling out, though, as he rightly says, his family history will be an important factor, too.

"Physical stress, such as the strain placed on the body due to an underlying illness, injury or even from every day issues such as nutritional issues, can cause hair to fall out.

"But what is less well known is that the emotional stress suffered by a player like Moura trying to make his mark on a new club can spark baldness, too.

"Emotional stress can caused profound changes in the body and lead to telogen effluvium, a shedding of the hair. The good news for Moura is that when the stress goes away, the hair may grow back.

"Moura will always have a baldness problem because of his family history but if he starts banging in the goals for Tottenham like he did on Saturday, we could see an improvement in his hair.

"He could also bolster his hairline by following the example of other soccer stars such as Wayne Rooney and Didi Hamann by having a hair transplant."

Moura has a young child with his glamorous Brazilian wife Larissa Saad, 26, a Kim Kardashian lookalike who has built up 164,000 followers on Instagram with lots of sexy shots of herself.

Dr Shahmalak is famous for his work with celebrities and he has treated a number of current and former Premiership stars including ex-Liverpool and Man City midfielder Didi Hamann.

He added: "I have treated Didi who was happy to share his story as well as several well-known Premiership stars who have preferred not to go public about their procedures. They all come to me in the summer break and return to the Premiership with a much fuller head of hair a year later.

"They go under the knife to boost their self-confidence and also protect their image rights. Sports stars earning millions from their image rights needs to look closely at their personal grooming. Big brands are reluctant to sign endorsements with stars who are bald."

Dr Shahmalak's other high profile celebrity clients at Crown Clinic in Manchester include the model Calum Best, Gogglebox star Chris Butland-Steed, and Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts, who all had FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) procedures with Dr Shahmalak. Dr Shahmalak performed two FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) procedures on the TV doctor Christian Jessen.
