How Effective Are Hair Loss Supplements?

POSTED: 09 September 2020

There are undoubtedly hundreds of hair loss supplements on the market, but how many of them are legit and legal?

Some of these supplements are branded and marketed as miracle cures for baldness, which isn’t the case.

When buying any supplements or medication online, you must seek professional advice from your GP, as they can have a detrimental effect on your body and health.

Crown Clinic are stockists for Finasteride, Minoxidil and Toppik, and Help Hair AFR, if you decide to use hair loss medications, we strongly recommend using these. You can find more about the recommended hair loss medications here. While these hair loss supplements have been approved, it’s still vital that you seek medical advice before taking them. If you suffer badly from baldness, there are other long-lasting restoration options available, including hair transplants

Are Hair Loss Supplements Effective?

The first and most important thing to note is that hair loss and restoration varies between each person. Not every method is suitable, and it does depend on your medical history, and how severe your hair loss is. Before taking hair loss medications or deciding on a hair transplant procedure, you must speak with an expert first or book a consultation with Dr Shahmalak.

If your hair loss is severe or impacting your mental health, you might want to consider a FUT or FUE hair transplants, as these procedures are the only current and proven treatments that produces permanent results.

There are multiple causes for hair loss, such as underlying health conditions, genetics, and poor diet. So, it’s advised to seek professional advice, so you can further understand the cause and the best treatment plan.

Your diet is key to healthy hair growth. So, it’s essential that you maintain a nutritional diet, and have a particular focus on protein and iron-rich foods, as these are key to producing hair cells. Hair loss can be a result of a poor diet, but if you have a balanced diet and your body is receiving the recommended daily nutrition, then your hair loss might be more serious. Therefore, hair loss supplements aren’t guaranteed to work and resolve the problem.

Did you know that your hair follicles are one of the fastest-growing cells in the human body? With that in mind, your hair is relying on a dependable supply of nutrients and energy, which can be difficult to obtain through diet alone. The inclusion of hair supplements can support the production of hair cells, but please don’t rely on these alone.

Hair loss supplements are effective to an extent, but they’re not necessarily a cure. It does depend on the cause of the hair loss. If hair thinning or baldness is down to a poor diet or stress, then including hair loss supplements along with a nutritional, balanced diet and making some changes to your lifestyle could work. If not, then you should consider other options.

How Quick Are Hair Loss Supplements Compared To A Hair Transplant?

There is no definitive answer to how quickly hair supplements work, as there are various factors to consider. However, some supplements such as Toppik are instant, but it’s only a temporary solution and provides more of cosmetic value than a long-term fix.

With a hair transplant, the grafted hairs typically begin to grow by 10-16 weeks after the procedure and will continue to grow as usual after that.

Side Effects For Hair Loss Supplements

As with any supplement or medication, there are side effects, but not everyone will experience them. You must read the information provided and seek professional advice before taking any.

If you receive side effects that aren’t listed or they’re consistent, you must contact your doctor immediately.

Cost vs Quality vs Longevity

We understand that hair transplants are costly and lengthy, but the results speak for themselves, leaving you with a head full of natural hair and confidence. Many people choose to go down the supplement route to cut costs and wait time, but while you’re not 100% guaranteed the desirable results, you could end up spending more in the long-run.

With hair loss supplements being non-surgical, they require less commitment, but you can often find yourself obsessing in the mirror for regrowth, which can have a psychological effect on your health and well-being.

Please contact Crown Clinic for some expert advice before committing to a treatment.

Finasteride

Finasteride is a prescription medication and should only be used under the supervision of a medical professional, such as your GP. Please do not buy this hair loss supplement online or from an untrustworthy source.

This hair restoration supplement treats the root cause of androgenetic alopecia and stimulates the hair follicles without impacting your testosterone levels.

Please note, Finasteride is a male-only non-surgical hair restoration treatment.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is popular amongst women and available to buy over the counter, but in a weaker concentration than if it was prescribed. However, please speak to a pharmacist before making a purchase or consult your GP.

While Finasteride is oral, Minoxidil is applied to the scalp. For best results, please use this non-surgical treatment with advice from a hair regeneration specialist.

Toppik

Toppik is a popular non-surgical hair restoration solution that instantaneously fills in balding and thinning areas of the scalp. Available in eight different colours to match your hair tone, Toppik can transform your appearance in 30 seconds – perfect if you’re heading out. It’s also wind and rain resistant and unnoticeable.

Toppik is made using the same protein your hair is made from, natural organic keratin, which means it intertwines with your hair securely.
