First Eyelash Transplant in the United Kingdom
Mr Shahmalak is a pioneering surgeon to have successfully carried out the first ever eye lash transplant in this country.
The female patient from the North West, had no eye lashes due to excessive pulling of eyelashes, through a condition called Trichotillo Mania.
The four hour procedure involves taking hair from the back of the head, and then placing individual hairs into cuts in the eyelid. The lashes thicken up gradually between four and six months after treatment. The procedure was pioneered in America.
Said Mr Shahmalak: "The surgery is a first of its kind in the UK and I am very proud to be the first surgeon to have performed such an operation".
It will benefit people who have no eye lashes due to medical conditions, such as burns and can also be performed for cosmetic enhancement of eye lashes.
