Hair Transplant UK
Crown Clinic offers expertise in the latest hair transplant techniques, including follicular unit grafts and multi-follicular unit grafts, and expert advice on the latest medicinal hair loss treatments.
The hair transplant process typically takes between two and four hours, and is conducted under a local anaesthetic on an out-patient basis. Treatment starts with the administration of the anaesthetic via a small-gauge needle – usually the least comfortable part of the process. At the beginning of surgery, small strips of skin are collected from the donor area and closed with small sutures.
Our main clinics are based in major cities London, Birmingham, Manchester where we provide both standard and high specialist treatments
Hair Transplants-Follicular
Unit Grafts and Multi-Follicular Unit GraftsThe tissue is then dissected under magnification into follicular unit grafts (containing 1-4 hairs) and multi-follicular unit grafts (containing 3-6 hairs each), which mimic naturally occurring follicles. Some surgeons use follicular unit grafts, while others prefer to use multi-follicular unit grafts in the central areas of the scalp. Crown clinic is one of the main established hair tranplant UK facilities offering this type of specialist treatment.
Many hair loss clinics use the standard mini-micro grafting process, where graft sizes are arbitrarily determined by the doctor, generally including clumps of up to 12 follicles – saving the time a consultant needs to spend with individual patients. Crown Cosma Clinic uses only the latest, follicular graft techniques. Aftercare will include the application of a dressing to the treated area, and patients thereafter may be requested to make use of moist compresses or sprays and should sleep in a semi-upright position for next 2-3 days after the procedure, This is to minimize any swelling and bruising.
ComplicationsComplications are rare, but may include the following: Infection Itching Swelling Poor growth Poor scarring (wide scarring) Paraesthesia Cyst, papules, pastules Epidermoid cysts and ingrown hairs
Crown Cosma Clinic will work to minimise patient discomfort throughout the process and aftercare. Consultant Asim Shahmalak has been working with the NHS for ten years, and is the only Hair Transplant Surgeon currently working as a General Surgeon in the NHS. A Fellow of the Royal college of Surgeons in Ireland, Dr Shahmalak specialises in natural hair line restoration and minimally visible donor scars.
Medicinal hair loss treatments take the form of a pill (finasteride), or topical liquid (minoxidil). Finasteride works by preventing the enzyme 5-Alpha Reductase from converting testosterone into DHT, which can be used to encourage hair re-growth under expert supervision in men (although this treatment is not suitable for women). A two percent minoxidil solution is reportedly successful in around a third of cases of male hair loss, with a slightly higher figure for women. Temporary treatments for hair loss include coloured creams, sprays, and powders that can disguise thinning areas where there is still hair present. Hairpieces offer another temporary, non-surgical means of covering areas of hair loss – but often producing less-than-realistic outcomes.
