FUE
Benefits of the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique
- Less scarring that FUT
- Less bleeding than FUT
- Less post-operative discomfort
- No linear incision/scar
Dr. Shahmalak and the team at Crown Cosma Clinic have been performing Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) for several years, giving people from across the UK and globally the hair they want. With a consultation clinic in Harley Street, London and with clinics in Manchester and Birmingham, residents from across the UK can visit Dr. Shahmalak with ease, benefitting from a continuity of patient care that few other UK clinics can rival.
What's the difference between FUE & FUT?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is one of the two principle methods of hair transplantation - the other is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Follicular units are naturally occurring groups of hair that are normally made up of between one and four hairs. The process of extracting these units is distinct from 'strip harvesting' (Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT), whereby a strip of skin containing hair is harvested, and then later dissected into individual follicular units. Both techniques have proven effective in restoring hair.
In terms of scarring, FUE leaves small round, white 'pits' where grafts were removed, whereas strip harvesting (FUT) leaves linear scars where donor skin was taken from - and can be more visible.
FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction, offers several benefits over FUT. There is no necessity to avoid strenuous exercise following the procedure, there is less bleeding, and in theory it is possible to harvest skin from other areas of the body. If a scalp is too tight for strip harvesting (where linear incisions may open up too much), FUE is an effective alternative. FUE allows for a greater donor area to be drawn upon, whereas the process of FUT involves a much more localised strip of skin constituting the donor area. The FUE technique allows for the use of finer hair from the nape of the neck and eyebrows.
FUE is not always suitable for every patient. Because of the larger donor surface area - and the subsequent use of borderline areas of hair for transplant - can increase the risk of visible scarring, and the possibility that hair taken from these areas is not permanent. Lower yields and a higher level of susceptibility to damage are two of the disadvantages that FUE has compared to FUT.
While FUE is regarded as a highly effective hair transplant technique, what really determines a successful procedure is the experience and skill of the team and the quality of the extracted grafts: In this regard Dr. Shahmalak and the Crown Cosma Clinic team have a track record of successful procedures behind them that has made them one of Europe's leading hair restoration clinics.
