Do females also suffer from hair loss?

Contrary to popular belief female hair loss is not an uncommon condition. Statistics show that women can have hair loss with almost the same regularity as men. Hair loss is being viewed more as a cosmetic decrement which is becoming increasingly unacceptable for women who are proactively concerned regarding their appearance and self-image. Consequently sufferers of female hair loss are viable candidates for hair restoration surgery.

What causes hair loss in women?

Women can have hair loss at any age and the hair loss may not have any hereditary association. There are a wide range of causes of female hair loss. Hair loss in women can become evident after menopause and also occasionally appears after pregnancy. Female hair loss does not occur only in older (post-menopausal) women. It occurs with relatively high frequency in women who are pre-menopausal, even in women in their 20s and 30s.

Women appear to more subject to hair loss due to dietary reasons than men. Low iron levels are the most common dietary reason women experience hair loss, although other vitamins and minerals may be involved. Excessive Vitamin A intake can lead to hair loss. It has been reported by a few that Zinc may interfere with the absorption of iron, hence it can produce hair loss.

The symptoms of female hair loss

In the female equivalent of male pattern baldness - androgenetic alopecia or hereditary baldness - hair loss in women is less specific to the crown of the head and is generally seen as more of a thinning of the hair. This is one example of how the symptoms of female hair loss tend to differ from male hair loss.
