Recently, the media have been reporting on the apparent thinning of Nigella Lawson’s hair. Whilst the stories covered some of the common causes of female hair loss, little was said about the advances in female hair loss treatment.

A common cause of female hair loss, and the speculative reason behind Nigella’s thinning hair is lack of nutrients. When women diet –as Nigella has successfully been doing, the restricted nutritional intake means that the hair is likely to suffer. This is because replenishing these cells is not considered to be as important as cells in other parts of the body. The solution for this type of female hair loss would then be to consume nutrient rich foods such as eggs and avocados.

There are however, other causes of female hair loss; gradual loss associated with ageing, temporary hair loss during pregnancy and female pattern baldness, a hereditary condition that can cause anxiety, low self esteem and depression.

Not all female hair loss can be remedied through eating ‘superfoods’ or taking supplements – it requires a different type of female hair loss treatment altogether. There are non-surgical options available such as topical treatments that encourage hair growth. Alternatively, hair transplants are an increasingly popular option.

Using Micro Follicular Grafting, women suffering from thinning hair are able to conceal their hair loss easily with surgery. The treatment has a high success rate, and many women who undergo the treatment are incredibly satisfied with the results.

While Ms Lawson may be able to restore her once lustrous locks to their former glory, other women may need a little more help, and we now have the advanced treatments available to help.

Wayne Rooney is perhaps the best-known UK recipient of an FUE hair transplant, having been talked about in the media frequently since news of his procedure first broke. While other famous men have also had procedures in recent times – including actor James Nesbitt, chef Gordon Ramsay and Dancing on Ice judge Jason Gardiner – it is the Manchester United star that has really captured the public’s attention.

With on-pitch japery from Rooney involving him pointing at his lucky hair following a goal, interest in his operation has continued to grow. But have celebrity procedures such as his increased the number of people seriously looking into FUE hair transplants?

On this question Crown Cosma Clinic’s Dr Shahmalak commented: “Here at Crown Cosma Clinic we have had considerable interest in our FUE – follicular unit extraction – procedures ever since we first began carrying them out. The newspaper reports and TV interest in the hair transplants of Wayne Rooney and others have certainly inspired more people to contact us about our services. Having said that, interest in FUE was already very high, even without the spikes of interest caused by celebrity transplants.”

“Our reputation as one of the leading providers of quality FUE procedures has meant we’re often the first place people come to in order to find out more about having a procedure carried out. With myself ensuring continuity of patient care is provided at all times, and with clinics in London, Manchester and Birmingham, I’m happy to say many of those contacting us decide to place their trust in us – so we can give them the hair they really want.”

The RevitaLash brand has long been at the forefront of developing new products associated specifically with eyelashes. The company’s latest product, RevitaLash ® Advanced, has been formulated to help dramatically improve the appearance of eyelashes that suffer from being brittle, fragile, short, sparse or thin.

The importance of eyelashes as a key visual and practical part of the face is sometimes understated, but having thick, full lashes can in reality make a huge difference to how a face looks and how the eye is protected from dirt and other debris. Those behind the RevitaLash brand have worked hard for many years to help people achieve better looking lashes.

In clinical studies, 90% of those who tried RevitaLash ® Advanced reported better looking eyelashes. 58% stated their eyelashes looked better after just 3 weeks. Despite its dramatic effects, the treatment does not require a prescription.

There are many reasons why someone might suffer from thin, brittle or short eyelashes, including congenital conditions, trichotillomania or injury. RevitaLash Advanced might offer a way to improve the appearance of some of these conditions.

RevitaLash ® Advanced is now available from Crown Cosma Clinic. Contact Dr. Shahmalak’s team today to find out if RevitaLash Advanced can help improve the appearance of your eyelashes.

Surgery for conditions such as female hair loss or male hair loss – where related to eyelashes, eyebrows or the head – is not always necessary, and non-surgical products are coming onto the market regularly. Dr. Shahmalak is able to provide expert advice on all of these. Contact his team today to find out more.

The term Follicular Unit Extraction refers to one of the two main ways follicular units are extracted in the process of hair transplantation. These naturally occurring units are usually comprised of between one and four hairs. The other common method of follicular unit extraction, strip harvesting, involves taking a strip of skin containing hairs and then dissecting it afterwards. Both methods form the basis of follicular unit transplantation.

Scarring from FUE takes the form of small, typically white ‘pits’, while strip harvesting leaves a linear scar where the donor skin was removed.

There are several key advantages to Follicular Unit Extraction. There is no limitation of carrying out strenuous exercise after the procedure has taken place and makes it theoretically possible to harvest from other parts of the body. Where a scalp is too tight for the strip harvest technique, FUE can offer an effective alternative to FUT. The dimensions of the donor area can be expended with FUE (although not necessarily increasing the number of grafts unless carried out as part of an FUT procedure). Finer hair from the nape of the neck can be used for the hairline and for eyebrows using the FUE technique.

Not all patients are suitable candidates for FUE. Due to the greater donor area, there is a risk that lower and upper parts of donor areas are more likely to bear scars and that hair taken from borderline areas are not truly permanent. There tends to be a lower yield from FUE compared to FUT, and grafts are more susceptible to damage. It is more challenging to gain a natural distribution of follicular units and microscopic dissection may be required.

Dr Shahmalak is highly skilled and experienced in the realm of Follicular Unit Extraction, having ensured patients from across the UK and from countries around the world have benefitted from the procedure. If you want more information on FUE procedures, contact Crown Cosma Clinic today. If you wish, you can also complete our online consultation form. There is no obligation and your information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

There are a wide range of causes for female hair loss, but one of the most common is telogen effluvium. It is distinct from other types of hair loss in that its effects can be seen as a wide spread shedding of hairs, not only on the scalp, but elsewhere on the body too. The condition usually arises when the body’s physical or hormonal systems come under a high degree of stress, or as a reaction to some forms of medication.

It is common for the condition to worsen fairly quickly, before improving over the following six months. In some rare cases, the condition can become chronic.

Misdiagnosis of women with the condition can sometimes occur, with reasons including neurosis and over-anxiousness mistakenly given for the problem, which manifests itself in a diffused loss of hair rather than bald patches.

Over time though, most cases improve. Telogen effluvium is related to the growth cycles of hair, namely anagen – which last around three years (when the hairs grow), and telogen (when the hairs stop growing and rest), which last about three months.

Following a shock or some stressful event, the usual 15 per cent of hairs in the resting cycle can increase, which results in noticeable hair loss about three months later, when those hairs are shed.

In most circumstances, hair will begin to grow again, thickening up within a few months.

Most adults will experience hair loss of this kind at some point in their lives. If you’re experiencing hair loss and want professional, expert advice on how best to proceed, call Crown Cosma Clinic today.

Hair loss for anyone is distressing enough. But when you have the added stress of Cancer and the associated treatment of chemotherapy – this can lead to severe psychological distress. We recently learnt of an associate who had unfortuantely suffered from Cancer, but somehow managed to keep all of her hair.

Surprisingly enough, she told us it was because of the scalp cooling that allowed her to keep her hair during chemotherapy – which we all know is the most traumtatic side effects of the drugs given during treatment.

So we looked into it, and discovered how successful this treatment really is.

It’s known as Scalp Cooling which is a method used for lowering the temperature of the scalp. By reducing the scalp temperature by a few degrees creates a restriction in the amount of blood reaching the hair follicles thereby protecting them from the effects of the concentrated chemotherapy drugs carried in the blood stream.

The cap is normally worn for approximately 30 minutes before commencement of chemotherapy, continues to be worn during the administration of drugs and then for a short time afterwards (subject to the type of drugs being administered).

Many thousands of patients have been successfully treated. The success of scalp cooling cannot be guaranteed as a number of factors can affect the outcome. These might include age, hair type, hair condition, the type of cancer being treated and how a patient looks after their hair during the treatment. On most drug regimes research and studies using the Paxman Hair Loss Prevention System have shown success rates of patients who have not required a wig of between 70% and 90%.

We want to help Richard and his team by raising the awareness for the Cold Caps - a recent survey carried out revealed that 95% of the UK population are aware that chemotherapy treatment can cause hair loss, a staggering 82% of people do not know what cold caps are. This has since prompted their new national campaign ‘Cool Head, Warm Heart’.

For more information please speak with your consultant and/or nursing staff as this treatment is available on the NHS as well as Private Hospitals or alternatively visit www.paxman-coolers.com

For more information on their campaign ‘Cool Head Warm Heart’ visit www.coolheadwarmheart.co.uk

More recent examples of this type would be Channel 4′s Embarrassing Bodies doctor, Dr Christian Jessen, Dragon’s Den Duncan Bannatyne, Shaun Williamson of Eastenders aka Barry Evans and more recently John Travolta and James Nesbitt who has confirmed “it has changed my life”.

Apart from Hair Transplants few celebrities are opting for non-permanent solutions such as laser and artificial hair fibres i.e. Ryan Giggs, Graham Gooch and Shane Warne.

Few of the high profile cricketers and footballers who are not yet ready for Hair Transplant are opting to take the preventative method – known as Finasteride, for example Wayne Rooney. This medication is Sports Governing Body approved – so it is safe for any sportsman.

As Hair Transplants are getting more and more popular with the celebrities, hence the cost has become more and more affordable – I think this is the best way to achieve a more youthful appearance.

Ms AS from Greater Manchester came to visit us and was very distressed with her sparse eyebrows from overplucking and falling out from stress, she had always concealed this by wearing eye brow pencil – after speaking with so many women of all ages – this is very common. After a lengthy consultation with our surgeon, Mr Shahmalak, as she was not keen on the idea of surgery and wanted a solution that was non-invasive.

She was recommended a product known as RevitaLash – although it is made for the eyelashes, it was the same concept if applied to eyebrows.

Already by the 3rd day she could notice a visible difference.

4 Weeks later – they were looking a lot fuller compared to how they had been for years.

By 8 weeks – she felt as though her eyebrows were looking a lot fuller and they had gone back to normal. “I can now go to the gym, go swimming without feeling so conscious of my eyebrows. I do feel more confident as I no longer have to wear the eyebrow pencil and the look is so much more natural” said Ms AS.
