Hair loss for anyone is distressing enough. But when you have the added stress of Cancer and the associated treatment of chemotherapy – this can lead to severe psychological distress. We recently learnt of an associate who had unfortuantely suffered from Cancer, but somehow managed to keep all of her hair.

Surprisingly enough, she told us it was because of the scalp cooling that allowed her to keep her hair during chemotherapy – which we all know is the most traumtatic side effects of the drugs given during treatment.

So we looked into it, and discovered how successful this treatment really is.

It’s known as Scalp Cooling which is a method used for lowering the temperature of the scalp. By reducing the scalp temperature by a few degrees creates a restriction in the amount of blood reaching the hair follicles thereby protecting them from the effects of the concentrated chemotherapy drugs carried in the blood stream.

The cap is normally worn for approximately 30 minutes before commencement of chemotherapy, continues to be worn during the administration of drugs and then for a short time afterwards (subject to the type of drugs being administered).

Many thousands of patients have been successfully treated. The success of scalp cooling cannot be guaranteed as a number of factors can affect the outcome. These might include age, hair type, hair condition, the type of cancer being treated and how a patient looks after their hair during the treatment. On most drug regimes research and studies using the Paxman Hair Loss Prevention System have shown success rates of patients who have not required a wig of between 70% and 90%.

We want to help Richard and his team by raising the awareness for the Cold Caps - a recent survey carried out revealed that 95% of the UK population are aware that chemotherapy treatment can cause hair loss, a staggering 82% of people do not know what cold caps are. This has since prompted their new national campaign ‘Cool Head, Warm Heart’.

For more information please speak with your consultant and/or nursing staff as this treatment is available on the NHS as well as Private Hospitals or alternatively visit www.paxman-coolers.com

For more information on their campaign ‘Cool Head Warm Heart’ visit www.coolheadwarmheart.co.uk

Hair Transplant these days are becoming more and more popular with state of the art procedures and that is one of the reasons high profile people and celebrities are entertaining the idea of Hair Transplants.

More recent examples of this type would be Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies doctor, Dr Christian Jessen, Shaun Williamson of Eastenders and more recently John Travolta and Declan Donnelly (Ant & Dec).

Apart from Hair Transplants few celebrities are opting for non-permanent solutions such as laser and artificial hair fibres i.e. Ryan Giggs, Graham Gooch and Shane Warne.

Few of the high profile cricketers and footballers who are not yet ready for Hair Transplant are opting to take the preventative method – known as Finasteride, for example Wayne Rooney. This medication is Sports Governing Body approved – so it is safe for any sportsman.

As Hair Transplants are getting more and more popular with the celebrities, hence the cost has become more and more affordable – I think this is the best way to achieve a more youthful appearance.

Ms AS from Greater Manchester came to visit us and was very distressed with her sparse eyebrows from overplucking and falling out from stress, she had always concealed this by wearing eye brow pencil – after speaking with so many women of all ages – this is very common. After a lengthy consultation with our surgeon, Mr Shahmalak, as she was not keen on the idea of surgery and wanted a solution that was non-invasive.

She was recommended a product known as RevitaLash – although it is made for the eyelashes, it was the same concept if applied to eyebrows.

Already by the 3rd day she could notice a visible difference.

4 Weeks later – they were looking a lot fuller compared to how they had been for years.

By 8 weeks – she felt as though her eyebrows were looking a lot fuller and they had gone back to normal. “I can now go to the gym, go swimming without feeling so conscious of my eyebrows. I do feel more confident as I no longer have to wear the eyebrow pencil and the look is so much more natural” said Ms AS.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear from Dr Christian Jessen in April 2009 to discuss his own “embarrassing illness”.

When I first saw him at my Harley Street clinic about a year ago, he felt very self conscious of his high forehead and temples. I felt that he was not very comfortable in himself although a very confident man.

He had already decided in his mind before the consultation had even started that he would have his hair transplant procedure.

Following from a patient who had his hair transplant on Embarrassing Illnesses in 2008, Dr Jessen was so impressed with his results, he decided to make contact with me.

On the day of surgery, he was his usual cool self, slightly anxious as it was the fear of the unknown.

Once we started the surgery, it took about 5-6 hours to complete the surgery which was performed under local anaesthetic. Surgery was tiring but not painful, he said it was only uncomfortable for a couple of minutes when the local anaesthetic was given.

We gave him the post operative instructions on how to look after the grafts and he went back to his normal lifestyle as being a celebrity Dr within a week. He was aware that the results for the hair transplant would not be visible for at least 6 months.

Once he had the full growth of the grafts, he was very pleased with his results and the rest is history……

The common expression – “Blue-Eyed-Baby” emphasises the importance of the eyes in the overall perspective of our face right from the childhood. Besides their protective role, the eyelashes are no less important ornamentals to our eyes. Their size, colour and texture play an extremely important role in cosmetic terms. Human eyebrows consist of two hair arches above the level of our eyes and play an important decorative role of our face.

In consideration to the above-mentioned points, the eyebrows and eyelashes have always been given their due importance. As the societies are getting more and more beauty conscious, the need for their proper care and maintenance is also increasing. Presently the cosmetic treatment of eyebrows and eyelashes has become a routine job especially for women folk.

Nature generally provides the normal eyebrows and eyelashes but in some cases, due to some accident or the infection of hair inhabiting fungi and bacteria they get disfigured or not properly developed. In such situation, the face looks odd and unattractive and there is a feel of something missing. Hair grafting is the only answer to regain lost beauty. It also provides an appropriate answer for those who are not satisfied with their existing eyebrows or eyelashes or both. In this connection, it is worth mentioning that would-be patients require the services of a hair transplant surgeon on the priority basis like the one required for reducing the tummy and the hips and enlarging the chest specifically at the time of marriage. Unfortunately, there is great dearth of hair transplant surgeons particularly those specialising in eyebrow and eyelashes.

I’m sure you are all aware I successfully completed the first eye lash transplant surgery in the UK – you can read her story in the testimonials.

The condition for this young lady was an obssessive compulsive disorder called Trichotillomania – a condition that made her want to pull out her eye lashes from the age of 6 and stopped at the age of 14. She realised that she had no eye lashes which would give her an obvious feminine look.

She was desperate to have something done for her eye lashes and was even prepared to go across the atlantic for an eye lash transplant.

After extensive research she came across me and after a thorough consultation I offered her an opportunity to have the first eye lash transplant procedure in the UK.

She had a 4 hour procedure under local anaesthesia and came back for a review frequently from 3 days, 10 days, 2 weeks, 6 weeks and finally 3 months.

When she attended after 3 months she had an excellent result and was over the moon and informed me that I had changed her life.

I feel very proud to have performed the first successful eye lash transplant in the country and be able to change someone’s life forever.

Til to date I have performed further eye lash transplants and still remain to be the only eye lash transplant surgeon in the UK.

Please visit the gallery – certainly worth a look!

RevitaLash™ is a revolutionary new cosmetic eyelash conditioner developed by renowned American ophthalmologist*, Michael Brinkenhoff, M.D who has been practicing for more than 25 years. He developed the product for his wife, Gayle, who had been suffering from breast cancer and had lost most of her eyelashes. RevitaLash™ achieved such impressive results, that they agreed it should be shared with other women.

RevitaLash is a unique eyelash conditioner that will help you achieve the beautiful look of Longer, Thicker, and Fuller eyelashes.

Like liquid eyeliner, RevitaLash is simply applied once a day. Within three to ten weeks, your own natural eyelashes will look Longer, Thicker, Fuller, and BEAUTIFUL!

No matter how brittle, short, fragile, thin, or sparse your eye lashes are, RevitaLash can help you achieve long, beautiful, healthy looking eyelashes.

Many women either through over-plucking or simply bad luck, tend to have thinning eyebrows and eyelashes. Menopause plays a part in this process and women are left with next to no lashes or eyebrows or what they do have is sparse.

The eyelash conditioner – RevitaLash – is the ONLY lash product on the market developed by an Ophthalmologist (an eye doctor) – his name Dr Michael Brinkenhoff and the product was developed for his wife Gayle who’s a 6 x cancer survivor and who’s been through chemotherapy 8 times!

RevitaLash is now one of the best selling cosmetic products on the market.

RevitaLash is suitable for anyone who has thin, sparse, eye brows or eyelashes.

• It’s safe for those who are suffering from glaucoma

• It’s safe for those who wear contact lenses

• It lasts 3-5 months

• It’s cheaper than false eyelashes and it’s better for your eyelashes

• It contains a derivative of an ingredient commonly found in glaucoma medicine which conditions the area where the lashes come through and stimulates the follicles to promote longer, fuller and thicker lashes.

• People who have lost lashes and brows due to cancer, thyroid disease or menopause can all benefit from using RevitaLash.

• Quick and easy to apply – a clear liquid eyeliner which you apply at night before bedtime – results can be seen within three weeks to as long as three months.
